Hey just brought a brand new old stock z400 and i was wanting to know what fuel i should run in it. its stock standard other than changing the gearing to a 13 tooth on the front.
I have been running it on 98 octane but i put a tank of 95 through it and it seemed to run a little better

91 will be fine. You will notice a difference in the octanes while running them. The higher the octane, the cooler it burns. The cooler it burns the less the motor has to work. The less the motor works, the longer it lasts. The higher the octane the cleaner it burns also. And the cleaner it burns, the longer it lasts too. It's all about the wallet. If you can afford the high octane, get it. But for now with a stock motor, 91 will do fine. The more you modify the motor the more you will need a higher octane gas.

On a stock motor 87-91 is just fine. You're wasting your money buying anything other. Octane ratings are there to let you know the point of temperature/pressure at which the fuel will detonate or "ping". The higher the octane, the higher the pressure/temp it can handle before it self ignites or detonates. Octane does not dictate wether it will run cooler or hotter, nor cleaner or dirtier. The quality of the fuel and the detergents added to fuel do have an effect on how clean it will burn and the deposits it will leave in your engine.
The stock engine is I believe 11.2:1, it is somewhere around there, so there's absolutely no need for anything higher than 87. You don't need higher octane until you're running high compression 13:1 and up.

I thought it was the higher the octane, the cooler? And the lower the hotter? I might be getting mixed up. I have had like 2 hours of sleep in 3 days haha.

The higher the octane, the hotter an engine can get before it detonates. Octane has nothing to do with how hot or cool the engine runs. Running a high octane oxygenated fuel can actually cause you to run hotter because you're leaning out the engine with the extra oxygen. That's only because of the oxygenation though.

your lowest is 91 RON, MON, or R+M/2 ?
a stock Z should have no issues running 87 rm2. most people use 91 because the book says so and its safe. anything more than that and you are just wasting money and losing power.
where are you located? welcome!
